Pennsylvania Large Meteor/ Fireball Bolide 24JUN2010

Meteor Sounded Like Frying Bacon!

Derik Bowers writes:

I had the best meteorite experience in my life today at 9:58 pm. I saw a huge fireball for about 5 seconds. I was in Williamsport, MD. It came from the SE and headed NW. My first thought was who is shining a spotlight in the field? I then looked right, and in the second that I looked right I heard a loud boom, and sizzle like bacon. The boom was so loud that it made me jump! I saw stones shedding off this. I saw yellow , green, and white. I saw the dark flight for a second or so; it was like white pin dots. I did some research and it seems to been the brightest in White Hall, MD; maybe PA. I think I am less than 100 miles from the strewnfield.

Some here report seeing fireball in sky
A bright light in the sky over Lancaster County attracted the attention of at least a few people Thursday night. What caused the light was uncertain as of press time. Three people called the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era shortly after 10 p.m. to report seeing the light. About the same time, several people from Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and Connecticut posted on Twitter that they saw an object, which they described as a "fireball" or "meteor."...

I am from Ohio and also seen the meteor. It was around 10pm. The head of the meteor had a greenish color and the tail was white. At first I thought it was fireworks but it was way to big to be fireworks. I did not hear any noise from it. It was definitely an awesome experience!

I saw the meteorite fall from what looked like north to south in an arc that seemed to have red at the edges and bright hot blue in the center of the trail and in the final huge round burst/explosion/burning up. It seemed to fall for almost 2 seconds as we drove east on I-80 and appeared to be arcing at the end of the highway. This was being observed from about milemarker 15? I forgot to look. But it was 10:03 pm.
I was amazed and couldn't remember such a long slow huge fall like that.

I also saw this fireball from Bethesda, MD - just north of DC. I was outside watching this year's huge number of fireflies, looking up and saw the object light-up almost directly overhead - about 80 degrees up from due east at 9:56PM. It burned green and moved very quickly compared to other fireballs I have seen. It disappeared over the northern horzion after only 4 seconds. It was bright enough to cast shadows.

I saw it as well. It went in a SE to NW direction (we know them well in DC)...glowing a bright green. Brightest shooting star that I've ever seen before!

I saw this in Downingtown, Pennsylvania at 9:59, which is east of Lancaster. It was huge and very bright white!

Saw a greenish, sparking meteor from Arlington, VA just before 10PM Eastern last night. I was on the 11th floor of a building and it was no more than 30 degrees up from my vantage point. It was NNE of my position and seemed to go East to West in a very flat trajectory.

we live in east petersburg pa and were sitting on our step at the side entrance to our home. We were facing north running parallel with route 72 when all of a sudden the ground lit up. Our eyes were directed to the sky at which time we viewed a very very bright bluish/white ball of light in the sky. Reminded me of what can be seen when a welder strikes an arc.

June 24, 9:58pm, Watching from right near the border of PA (NY side) I couldn't believe my eyes of what I seen in the sky. This was the largest and brightest thing I've ever seen fall from space. Lasting about 5 seconds from my view, I seen a bright white and blueish color, A ball of fire, breaking apart as it entered the atmosphere. What I want to know is, "Where did this thing land?" I couldn't imagine something that size burning up before it hit the ground.

Alan from West Chester PA. I saw it as well. It looked like a huge firework taking off but it was definately heading down not up and I never heard any explosion or landing sound. Very, very cool trail. Direction it was heading from my line of sight was in a WestSouthWest direction.

Alan from West Chester. Saw it as well. Huge fireball with green, white and some yellow. Although looking like a huge firework it was heading down not up. Looked to me like it was heading almost due West and slightly south. I did not her any accompanying or post sighting sounds. Best sighting ever for me.

I saw it from my position just south of Lovettsville, Virginia looking towards the north. It was huge, white, and green--seemed so close by that it took my breath away!

My father and I saw it near Amherst, Mass. as we hiked through the woods and came to a clearing at around 9:50 or so. It was to the southwest at about 25 to 30 degrees and was low enough to drop below the trees near the end of its trajectory. Even where we were, it was bright enough to create dim shadows as it was visible for around 2 seconds. The fireball was bright orange and the trail it left was florescent green.

I saw the fireball in Canadensis, PA. It covered over half the sky from front to back. The whole thing was glowing blue and it sounded like a jet! I have never seen something so amazing.

I was driving up I-95 in North Carolina at mile marker 160 when I saw the meteor dead ahead of me - it appeared to fall nearly vertically, perhaps 5-10 degrees from the vertical from right to left, and I'd guess roughly from about 30 degrees elevation to 20 (hard to be sure, as I'm not sure if the stretch of road I was on was level and I still had to focus on driving), and it was brilliant green. Couldn't help thinking of H.G. Wells.

I live in Northeast PA, and I was talking on my phone around 9:45 p.m. and I was about 10 minutes into the phone call when I saw the meteor. I almost jumped out of my skin it was so close!! I can't believe I could actually hear it too. It was amazing. I've seen meteor showers, but this was unreal. I kept shouting on the phone I can't believe what I just saw.

I was in Lancaster for the week. I was fishing in a pond when a big huge light was coming from the sky and then the pond I was fishing in was pebbled about 5-10 minutes later. I did not know what had happened until I read the newspaper the next morning and it all made sense!

My fiancee and I saw this. We live in Coaldale, PA and it was directly overhead when it 'burst'. We thought it was a firework at first but it lit up the sky way more than what a flare could do. We were in my truck and watched most of it out of the sunroof (glad it was open) and heard some crackling noises. After some 30 years of being an avid amateur astronomer I finally got to see a true fireball.
